Common Sex Crime Charges in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Michigan is no stranger to sex-related crimes. In fact, one in five women will reportedly face some kind of sexual assault in their lifetime. These are emotional and high-stakes cases. If you have been accused of a sex crime in Grand Rapids, you need an attorney who is ready to do whatever it takes to defend you and ensure your freedoms are protected. At SBBL Law, our team has experience handling the following kinds of sex crime cases:

  • Sexual assault. According to one study, every 68 seconds, an individual is allegedly sexually assaulted. Sexual assault can include any kind of unwanted sexual contact, such as pressuring someone to engage in sexual acts or forcing the act on another person, whether or not penetration takes place.
  • Rape. In a single recent year, the city of Grand Rapids has reported 144 rape cases.
  • Criminal sexual conduct. This crime can occur when an individual allegedly forces another person to undergo sexual penetration or sexual contact without their consent. This can include cases where the victim is unable to give their consent due to their mental state, age, intoxication, or because of use of force or threats by the defendant.
  • Child molestation. Any form of sexual contact with a child under age 16 is illegal in Michigan. This can include acts of sexually touching a child under age 16 or taking photographs of a child under age 18 that are sexual in nature or sexually suggestive. There is one narrow exception called the Romeo and Juliet law for certain forms of sexual contact between teenagers who are close in age where both parties consent and one or both of them is under age 16.
  • Possession of child sexually abusive material (CSAM). The possession of CSAM can occur when an individual is in possession of images depicting children taking part in sexual acts or images that are sexual in nature. The person can be charged with this crime whether or not they took the images.
  • Internet sex crimes. In many cases, internet sex crimes involve minors, such as in cases of allegedly soliciting a minor or downloading child sexually abusive material. However, some cases might also include adult victims, such as the use of the internet to take part in sex trafficking or to send sexually-charged messages in cases of cyberstalking.
  • Indecent exposure. When an individual intentionally and knowingly exposes their genitals or sexual organs in public, this is considered an act of indecent exposure. It can result in criminal charges and subsequent penalties.
  • Accosting a minor for immoral purposes. When someone solicits, encourages, or coerces a minor to engage in immoral or indecent conduct, that person may be charged with accosting a minor for immoral purposes.
  • Charges of solicitation or prostitution. Any party involved in a situation of alleged prostitution can be charged with a sex crime in Michigan. This can include individuals participating in sex work or those who solicit them.

Hire a Sex Crime Lawyer to Defend You

In most sex crime cases, it’s your word against the word of the alleged victim. You need a Grand Rapids criminal defense attorney who understands this and can review all the details of your case to build a strong defense strategy. The most common defense strategies for sex crime cases include:

  • Consent. If the alleged victim is an adult and offered their consent, you are likely not guilty of a sex-related crime. Your attorney can demonstrate that the opposite party consented to the actions that have been called into question.
  • Violation of rights. If members of law enforcement violated your constitutional rights at any point during your arrest or interrogation, or in collecting evidence, your attorney may be able to have your charges dropped on these grounds.
  • False accusations. An alleged victim may claim that you violated them in a sexual manner out of confusion, mistaken identity, misremembering, or in acts of intentional malice against you. Your sex crime attorney from SBBL Law can collect evidence against these accusations and prove your innocence.
