is a seasoned trial attorney who has defended and prosecuted hundreds of criminal and civil cases and now represents individuals and businesses in criminal prosecutions and grand jury investigations brought by state and federal agencies. He seeks to mitigate client risk by efficiently analyzing and evaluating investigation evidence and attempting to anticipate the prosecution’s objectives and strategy, often before criminal charges are filed. Where charges are unavoidable, Heath assists clients with critical decisions about whether to take a case to trial, weighing the risks and benefits of any course of action. If an acceptable resolution cannot be reached, Heath has significant trial experience and will vigorously defend his clients’ interests.
Heath is a lead partner in the following practice areas:
Before joining SBBL Law, Heath was a federal prosecutor for the US Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan in Grand Rapids. He initially specialized in asset forfeiture proceedings, where he prosecuted financial crimes—including mail and wire fraud, embezzlement, and postal theft. He trained federal, state, and local law enforcement officers in asset forfeiture law and policy.
While an Assistant US Attorney, Heath was commended by the IRS and FBI for outstanding prosecutorial skills in agency investigations. Heath went on to handle many types of federal charges, from investigation and grand jury indictment through trial, sentencing, and appeal. During his most recent position with the US Attorney’s Office, he led and directed teams of federal, state, and local law enforcement officers to investigate and prosecute complex drug trafficking and money laundering cases in the federal criminal justice system.
Before joining the US Attorney’s Office, Heath worked in Philadelphia for the law firm of Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP, where he represented financial services and insurance clients in commercial litigation, and he developed and conducted insurance-related fraud and compliance investigations.
Our criminal lawyers represent clients in nationwide federal criminal cases and Title IX investigations, and we regularly appear in courts throughout Michigan:
